All About "Emailiases"

What is an Emailias?
|
The address alias (or emailias) is a two-way email proxy to your
real email address. Any email that an online vendor sends to an emailias is immediately
forwarded to your personal email address, allowing you to read all email normally. You
can reply to emails sent through an emailias because of a technology we call "Reply-Masking".
There are two types of emailiases:
-
Standard Emailias: You create a Standard Emailias to give to a website instead
giving your own personal email address. Most people will only use Standard Emailiases.
A Standard Emailias is indicated by a white or red mask.
-
Friend Emailias: A Friend Emailias is created to give to a website instead of
giving away the personal email address of a friend of yours. This is useful when
sending e-cards or using the "send-a-link" features on web pages. This allows you to
protect your friends' email addresses just as you protect your own. The Friend Emailias
is a one-time-use email address, which is destroyed after one email goes through
it. This allows you to send the e-card or link to a friend, but doesn't let anybody
else abuse that email address by sending unwanted email to them. A Friend Emailias
is indicated by a yellow smiley-face.
Good friends use Friend Emailiases to protect their friends!
Emailiases are usually created with a random-looking address. This is done to keep spammers
from easily guessing your email address.
Named Emailiases are also available to Full Members. A Named Emailias is a Standard
Emailias, but allow you to create emailiases that are easier to remember, such as "my-left-foot@emailias.com".
Named Emailiases are easier to remember, but are also easier for spammers to guess. Think about
this first before using a Named Emailias.

What do I do with an emailias?
|
Give it away! Freely! Create as many of them as you like and give them away!
Every time that a website asks for your email address, Click, Copy, Go!
Emailiases are an inexhaustible resource. You can create as many of them
as you like. We recommend that you create one for every website that you
visit. Once you have an Emailias.com membership, you can create an unlimited
number of emailiases to give away.
Normally, you're very cautious about who you give your email address to.
You think, "If I give my email address to some website, then I can never take it
back!" Now, you can give away an emailias and not worry about unwanted
email. Any time you don't like what is being sent to you, simply disable
or delete the emailias.

How do I create an emailias?
|
There are two ways to create an emailias.

simply
Click, Copy, Go!
-- Click the button, copy the address, and go on your way!
It's fast! It's easy! It's sexy! It's the best thing since sliced bread!
-
Visit the Emailias.com Website: A slightly less exciting (but equally
effective) way to create an emailias is to:

- Click on the "Emailiases" tab on the top of the page,
- Click on the "New Emailias" tab on the left of the page.

Once you have your emailias, you can copy it to the website that you're visiting.

How do I remember so many email addresses?
|
You may think that having so many email addresses to remember will be confusing,
but this is not true. All you have to do is remember to create a new one
every time that a website asks for your email address. We take care of
the rest. We do everything else for you:
-
We choose a random address that is less likely to be guessed by spammers.
-
We store the new emailias and remember it so you don't have to.
-
We create a meaningful nickname to remember who the emailias given to.
-
We remember which website you gave the address to.
-
We remind you if you have an emailias already created for websites that you visit.
-
We tell you right in each email who you gave the emailias to, in case
you receive unexpected email (spam).
-
You can quickly view or edit the emailias properties or delete the emailias
right from the email that you receive.
-
You can search for emailiases from within your Emailias.com account.

What if my email address changes?
|
In the old world (before Emailias.com), you would give your one email address to many
websites. If you ever changed your email address, you would have to tell all of these
websites that your address has changed--what a waste of time!
With Emailias.com, you don't have to tell anybody about your new address. You simply go
to your Emailias.com account and change the target that your emailiases are linked to.
All of the websites still send email to your emailiases, and they never know the difference.
Even more, you don't waste time telling everybody, and you don't lose contacts that you'd
like to keep.

What is the difference between "disable" and "delete"?
|
An emailias has two modes: enabled and disabled. An enabled emailias
re-routes any email that it receives to the target email address that is linked with
the emailias.
A disabled emailias quietly discards any email that it receives. This allows you to
temporarily "pause" an email address so that you don't receive email from the sender.
To the sender, the email appears to go through, so they think that the email address
is still valid (which it is!). If you ever want to receive email again, you just
"enable" the emailias--all future email will then be forwarded to your target email
address again.
A disabled emailias could be useful if you are required to give an email address to a
website, but you don't use that website very often. For example, you may do holiday
shopping once a year at a particular website, and want to receive the emails that
confirm your orders. However, you may not want to receive the monthly sale announcements
that the website sends out. So, for this website, you disable the emailias and keep
your personal email account free of the junk mail. We'll take care of throwing it
away, so you'll never see it (but only if you disable the emailias).
When you no longer want to use an emailias, you may delete it. This removes
the emailias from your Emailias.com account. Any email sent to a deleted emailias will
be bounced back to the sender to indicate that the email address is no longer valid.
Once you delete an emailias, you can never get it back, so be sure you won't
need it before deleting it.

|
|
What does it mean to "Retire an Emailias"?
|
Every emailias can be "retired". It is a new way to help get rid of spam. It's sort of
like deleting an emailias (see above), but anybody who sends an email to the retired
emailias will receive a message back, letting them know that you changed your email
address and that they can get the new one by visiting a web page.
There is a separate page dedicated to retiring an emailias.

What is Auto-Expiry?
|
In Advanced mode, the Auto-Expire feature tells an emailias to automatically disable
or delete itself after a certain number of days or emails has passed.
As an example, you could create an emailias for a website while shopping online,
but only want to receive sales receipts and perhaps confirmation of shipping.
This would normally happen within a couple of weeks, so you could set the email
to automatically disable itself after 14 days. Therefore, they won't be able
to send you any junk email after the 14 days has passed.
Or, perhaps you are expecting a white-paper that you requested, which is being
sent to you via email. You can set the emailias to delete itself after 1 email.
After you get the email, the emailias is no longer valid, and you don't have to
worry about unwanted junk email from the sender.
